Brent Hit a Five-Month High. The 30-Year Yield Went Down
Oil is up again and long yields are lower. The bond market reads crude as a drag on growth. The even-weight strategy keeps its defense in bills, and none of its three sectors runs on fuel.

THOR Risk Gauge
Neutral. The index strategy is fully invested across the three major American indexes. The even-weight strategy holds 60.3% in three sectors and 40.3% in Treasury bills. Brent at a five-month high and a ten-year above 5.1% offset Monday's tech bounce.
The THOR View
Oil climbed again overnight as the fighting in the Middle East kept going. Brent is $111.27, its highest level since mid-May. December crude is back above $100 and up 4.7% over the past month. Normally that pushes yields up across the curve, because oil feeds inflation. This morning only the short end did that. The two-year rose 1.5 basis points to 4.776%, while the 30-year fell 2.4 to 5.449%.
That split says the bond market sees two things at once. Short rates price a Fed that may have to stay tight against fuel prices. Long rates price slower growth, because $111 oil works like a tax on every driver and every shipper. The Fed meets October 28, and its quiet period means no speech will settle that debate first.
The even-weight strategy keeps its defense where that debate does the least damage. Bills are 40.3% of the portfolio, and the three-month yields 4.191%. Monday showed why that matters. The S&P 500 rose 0.42%, yet utilities fell 2.01%, real estate 1.16% and consumer staples 0.47%. Those are the sectors investors usually call defensive, and they trade like long bonds when rates move. Bills held flat.
The equity side is built away from the fuel bill. Healthcare is 20.8% of the portfolio, financials 20.2% and technology 19.2%. None of the three buys oil as a major input. Drug demand, bank lending and software spending don't change when diesel goes up a dime. Technology rose 1.36% Monday, while healthcare slipped 0.60% and financials 0.83%.
