TL;DR

  • Scott Bessent holds a press conference this afternoon to detail sanctions on Iran, after calling it "an economic D-Day" in a weekend Financial Times op-ed. Crude went the other way into it, with WTI at $85.27 and Brent at $92.95, both off about 2%.

  • Canada published its retaliation list. Ottawa taxes American agricultural equipment, steel, dairy, appliances, pulp and paper and electronics from September 8, answering 50% American duties that start Wednesday.

  • Long yields are lower for the first time in three sessions, the 10-year at 4.712% and the 30-year at 5.254%. Nvidia reports Wednesday after the close against consensus near $93 billion.

Market Pulse

As of 7:15 AM ET, 8/24/26

  • S&P 500 futures are down 0.27%.

  • Nasdaq 100 futures fall 0.69%.

  • Dow futures are off 0.15%.

  • Russell 2000 futures slip 0.22%.

Friday finished green across the board. The S&P 500 closed at 7,674.37, up 0.43%, the Dow at 53,277.01, up 0.98%, and the Nasdaq Composite at 26,180.45, up 0.43%. The Russell 2000 added 0.77%, and the S&P 500 still lost 1.37% on the week.

The 10-year Treasury yields 4.712% and the 30-year 5.254%, both lower this morning. The 2-year is 4.236%. WTI trades at $85.27 and Brent at $92.95. Gold is $4,702 an ounce and silver $68.85. Volatility runs 15.94. Bitcoin trades near $77,600 and the euro buys $1.1667, with the dollar index at 99.00.

THOR Risk Gauge

Constructive. Both published strategies stay near fully invested, Friday was green across all four American indexes, and long yields are backing off their highs. The calendar is the reason it isn't stronger. A scheduled geopolitical announcement lands this afternoon, 50% Canadian tariffs start Wednesday, and the largest earnings report of the quarter follows that evening.

The THOR View

Bessent details the Iran campaign this afternoon. Washington's public demand is that Tehran relinquish control of the Strait of Hormuz, and Iran has said it will stop Gulf exports if the campaign continues. WTI is $85.27 and Brent $92.95, both down roughly 2% after Brent gained 5% last week. The more useful number is what energy equities did during that 5% week: the sector added 2.79%, made no new closing high after Wednesday, and finished Friday down 0.17% on a session when nine of eleven sectors rose. Energy sits at zero in the even-weight strategy. A commodity that moves on a press conference, with equities that will not follow it, is not a trend the system owns.

Canada dated its answer Friday night. Ottawa's list starts September 8 and responds to 50% American duties effective 12:01 a.m. Wednesday. Two-way goods trade with Canada ran $376 billion in the first half of this year, double China's and second only to Mexico's. Industrials runs 15.9% of the even-weight strategy, and the tariff list and the Gulf story land on opposite sides of the same sector. Farm and construction machinery is on Ottawa's list. Aerospace and defense is what gets bid when a shipping lane becomes a headline.

The index strategy runs the S&P 500 at 50.1% and the Dow at 49.0%. Friday the price-weighted average rose 0.98% against 0.43% for the broad index, and this morning it is giving back the least of the four, down 0.15% against 0.69% for the Nasdaq 100. Nvidia reports Wednesday after the close, with consensus near $93 billion in quarterly revenue against company guidance around $91 billion. Thirty industrial names weighted by price and five hundred weighted by market value do not read that report the same way, and the strategy splits evenly between them.

The strategy runs 49.5% in equities, 18.7% in specialty currency exposure, 16.0% in broad commodities and 13.4% in fixed income and rate hedging, with a 2.4% bitcoin-strategy line. The long dollar position is still the largest single line, and the dollar index added 0.20% this morning to 99.00. The energy sector line is the fourth largest and the biggest single equity sector exposure in the strategy.

One Thing to Watch

Bessent's press conference this afternoon. If the detail reaches Iranian export buyers, crude moves several percent in either direction before Tuesday's open. Materials and industrials are the two real-economy positions in the even-weight strategy that price off input costs.
